Down with the rand
Article Abstract:
The South African rand has dropped in value since Jun 21 1998 and this is seen by some analysts as the result of speculation and negative investor sentiment toward emerging markets. South Africa is also seen as reluctant to increase rates of interest since rate rises would hit economic growth. The drop in value of the rand has had little impact on poor blacks, though mortgage rates are higher, and foreign holidays are more expensive. Gold miners and other exporters should benefit from the drop in the rand's value.

A lesson from South Africa
Article Abstract:
The South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission has released its report to President Nelson Mandela. The African National Congress had sought to prevent its publication, but this attempt was rejected by South Africa's High Court. The task of the commission was ambitious, and it has sought to be even-handed. The country is still divided, and there have been difficulties involved in examining the past, but the effort has been worthwhile.
