Driving lessons
Article Abstract:
General Motors (GM) and Toyota have formed alliances with China's Jinbei, a state-owned conglomerate of auto-parts manufacturers, but with different results. Poor profits, closed assembly lines and managerial disputes have plagued the GM-Jinbei truck joint venture, which began in 1992. On the other hand, Toyota has helped Jinbei to start a thriving van-producing division. Toyota's decision to limit its involvement to technical collaboration and to avoid an equity stake enabled it to avoid GM's losses. China's Shenyang Automotive is also making vans under license from Toyota.
