Traveller's tales
Article Abstract:
The farming village of Qizhong, near Shanghai, China, has been deemed a model village by local authorities. It offers residents cable television service to their houses, which range from single-story farm structures to 200-square-meter houses. The village also has a fitness center and its school is equipped with a swimming pool. The changes blatantly apparent in the village resulted from the land privatization scheme initiated in 1982. The township relinquished land, but regulated housing, a strategy which has ensured the success of the unique privatization project.

Caste-iron resolve: rehabilitation scheme takes aim at feudalism
Article Abstract:
The New Delhi rehabilitation center Mufti Ashram helps return children from indentured servitude back to their villages, with a three-month training program including basic literacy. Poorly educated boys from rural areas, raised to accept the feudal Hindu hierarchy, make ideal slave labor in factories in the city. Social activists want to move a child labor force estimated to run as high as 100 million into mandatory primary education. Elementary changes such as brightly painted classrooms help dramatically.
