Dropping out of education: Grammy of Thailand to focus on music business
Article Abstract:
The decision of Thailand's Grammy Entertainment PCL to move out of the education business to focus on its core business of record music production sits well with a number of stock analysts, predicting the move will propel Grammy stocks to reach 150 baht. Grammy stocks closed at 138 baht at the end of August 1998. The bullish forecast on Grammy stocks comes from Grammy's success in music marketing, where the company continued to post gains in music sales, as much as a 6% gain in sales for the first six months of 1998. Music will become Grammy's main revenue earner, accounting for 69% of overall sales from 37% in 1997, while education will be downgraded from 39% of the business to only 5%.

U.S., Europe urge WTO to push Japan on copyright laws
Article Abstract:
The US and the European Union have both initiated action against Japan for its failure to amend its copyright law in line with an existing international agreement on intellectual property rights. Under current Japanese rules, only those recordings made after 1971 are protected. The complainants contend that copyright protection should be extended over recordings made as far back as 1946.
