Predators at the gate: Ho's gambling monopoly is a tempting target
Article Abstract:
Macau Amusement and Tourism Co (STDM) won the right to convert Macau into a major gambling center in the 1960s. STDM holds a monopoly on nine Macao casinos and accounts for from 25% to 33% of Macao's economy. The company faces requests from the legislature of Macao for more openness over its finances. Mainland China may also be interested in the monopoly following the handover to China. Stanley Ho, the managing director of STDM, holds 75% with two other investors with a Hong Kong base.
