Drowning in data
Article Abstract:
Biologists have come to need mathematical and computing skills with the development of genetic research and other changes in biology which have led to a large increase in data needing to be processed. Genes involve the storage of information and this means that biology is itself an information science. The National Institutes of Health has called for the setting up of biocomputing centers in the US to tackle the problem of lack of resources. Physical scientists tend to be more at home with numbers than biologists, but biologists are having to become more numerate.
