Dumbing up
Article Abstract:
Oprah Winfrey has been moving upmarket with the setting up of the Oprah Book Club, and a move away from shows depicting gutter horrors. She has also produced and starred in a motion picture about a runanway slave during the 1870s. Her image includes a stress on self-improvement and she has shared her experiences with her audiences. She moved to daytime TV from local news and then became the top daytime host in the US. The move upmarket may be linked to vanity, but is also rational in business terms.
