Dunhill may rethink targeted sponsorship
Article Abstract:
Rothmans, Benson & Hedges Inc. has secured the best exposure for its Dunhill cigarette brand as sponsor of Toronto's annual bike courier competition, The Alley-Cats Scramble 1997, but it may reconsider the sponsorship next year as tobacco restrictions takes into effect on October 1, 1998. Such event provides the chance for Dunhill to get closer to the community, particularly smokers age 20-up. However, this has raised criticisms again anti-tobacco activists, who claim that the cigarette brand has no right sponsoring a "youthful, active event." The Tobacco Act, meanwhile, will limit promotional materials for events to publications with predominantly adult readership and only permit promotional signs to be displayed where young people are, by law, not allowed.
