Dutch smart cards for computer security
Article Abstract:
Philips Crypto will unveil the first prototype of the V-card encryption device under the Netherlands government's $7.5-million program to establish multi-level security for all individual workstations in the country's four ministries. The V-card, which is a high-speed, hardware-based encryption device, uses an industry-standard PCMCIA external plug-in card where the device's encryption engine is incorporated. The V-card, usable for both laptop and desktop standalone or networked computers, will perform integrity checks of system software upon start-up, access control via user identity and password, and transparent file encryption.
