Article Abstract:
Foods providing health benefits have been called 'functional foods' and they have been seen as a potential growth areas. They involve a blurring of divisions between the drugs and the food market and they could account for 3% of the world food market. Their rapid growth is estimated at some 25% annually, and this means that they are attractive. Companies can charge more for these products demand for which should benefit from demographic trends. There are still a number of obstacles such as confusion over regulation, and identifying consumers likely to want such products.

Sucralose, consumed by about seven out of ten American women, makes them inactive with symptoms like mood swings, unexplained tiredness and cramps.
