B.C. forest regulations need an overhaul
Article Abstract:
In a recent Council study, Michael Percy, economics professor at the University of Alberta, indicates that British Columbia's forestry regulations may cause the resource to be undervalued, affect investments in the industry, and impede economic efficiency. Government objectives are to protect provincial income and jobs. However, current policies are causing the rotation period to be too long for second-growth stands and the harvesting of mature timber to be too slow. Percy attributes this to policy which emphasizes physical, rather than economic, factors. A model is developed which simulates the impact of market forces that are beyond the control of policy makers on the industry.

Faith in the forest
Article Abstract:
Some Filipino Catholic priests have found a new role as guardians of the Philippines' fast-disappearing forests. In Bukidnon, for instance, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources deputized Bishop Gaudencio Rosales and the 44 priests of his diocese as forest officers to help in its drive to stop illegal logging. The job is risky, however, as some top government officials and powerful businessmen manage big logging firms. Two priests have been murdered in connection with their activities to stop illegal logging in their provinces.
