Escorts derives 90 percent of its total income from sale of tractors. Its tractor sales have increased by 14 percent. Its partner, New Holland, plans to set up a tractor manufacturing facility in India. Escorts lowered its sales target to 48,500 units in 1997-98. The target will be 55,000 tractors in 1998-99 and 60,500 in 1999-2000. It is likely to export 500 tractors every year. It proposes to spend Rs550 crore on capital expenditure in the next 5 years. It plans to set up a manufacturing facility in Pune with an installed capacity of 12,000 tractors at a cost of Rs175 crore. Its return on capital employed is 14 percent, compared to 60 percent of Punjab Tractors. It plans to set up, in alliance with Carraro, a gear and assembly plant at a cost of Rs100 crore. (rk) >EN

Escorts Yamaha Motors Limited (EYML) proposes to become a leader in the motorcycles segment by the year 2000. It hopes to corner 30 percent of the motorcycles market. It proposes to introduce one model each year and post sales of Rs1,500 crore by the year 2000. EYML recently launched YBX 125, a 4- stroke model. It expects to raise its market share to 25 percent during 1998-99. (ag)
