ESCORTS
Article Abstract:
During April-July 1998, the cumulative sales of tractor major Escorts Ltd declined by 7 percent to 14,838 tractors from 16,045 units in the corresponding period of 1997. This fall was mainly due to the loss of mandays in May 1997 owing to labour unrest. Escorts Ltd is setting up its third manufacturing facility at Pune, which will be operational in the third quarter of 1999. This will increase the manufacturing capacity of Escorts Ltd to 80,000 tractors. It has also established a new joint venture with Carraro SPA of Italy, near the Pune plant, to manufacture axles and transmissions. Recently, Escorts Ltd launched an upgraded tractor model in its 22-40 HP segment. It plans to enter the 60-80 HP segment to increase its market share to 24 percent in the next 4 years. In 1997-98, its exports were 919 tractors. In 1998-99, it aims to export 3,500 units. (gsh)
