DUTY HARDENS SUGAR GRANULES
Article Abstract:
The Union government has increased customs duty on sugar from 20 percent to 27.5 percent. This includes a 5 percent raise in basic customs duty and a 10 percent surcharge. But even after the increase the landed price of sugar will remain significantly lower than local ruling prices. The landed price of foreign sugar at Calcutta will now increase from Rs13,800 per tonne to Rs14,700 per tonne but traders will still make profits as local mill prices are Rs15,700 per tonne. (khr)
