VHL LIKELY TO SEE 30% RISE IN PROFITS

The Venkateshwara Hatcheries Ltd group is likely to show a 30 percent increase in profit before tax for 1998-99. It is expected to register a turnover of Rs575-600 crore and a profit before tax of Rs55 crore in 1998-99 against a turnover of Rs500 crore and a profit of Rs42 crore in 1997-98. Sources say that the profit growth could have been 50 percent but for the losses registered by group company Balaji Foods and Feeds Ltd, which is engaged in manufacturing egg powder. The company had posted losses of Rs10 crore in 1997-98 and is expected to show similar losses in 1998- 99. (khr)

UB's Q2 NET FALLS 53%, TURNOVER DROPS 29%

United Breweries Ltd, the holding company of the UB Group, has shown a decline of 53 percent in its net profit to Rs4.28 crore in the second quarter of 1998-99 against Rs9.16 crore in the second quarter of 1997-98. Its turnover has declined by 28.8 percent to Rs52.7 crore from Rs74 crore while other income has remained stable at Rs27 crore against Rs26 crore. The company's total expenditure has declined to Rs63.7 crore from Rs78.5 crore while interest cost has increased to Rs9.9 crore from Rs6.9 crore. (khr)
