The opinions of Maurizio Chimino, director-general of the Sicilian fishing industry on the European UnionEs conservation policy applicable to the Union members are furnished. Chimino held talks with the Union to revise the policy explaining that some of the provisions therein were against the southern EuropeEs culture. A brief description of the trends in Sicilian fishing industry is furnished.

The Chilean artisanal fishermen are protesting against the actions of the fisheries sub-secretary Felipe Sandoval that has led to the virtual collapse of hake fishing in Chilean waters. Felipe Sandoval has allowed large vessels into the five-mile coastal areas reserved for artisanal fishing.
