Nepal's conservation plan: government is close to protecting new area
Article Abstract:
The Nepalese government is expected to declare some 1,800 square kilometers of the Kanchenjunga area near Mt. Everest as a wildlife conservation area. The area, which lies on the northeastern border between China and India, will be called the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area and will become the 15th protected area in Nepal. The move was prompted by the government's drive to increase national public lands by 14% to 20% over a five-year period. The government is also collaborating with Chinese and Indian conservationists to help preserve the region's exotic flora and fauna.
