Mississippi has one of the highest incarceration rates in the United States, with 15,000 of its three million residents in prison. The state's 'Truth in Sentencing' law forces prisoners to serve 85% of their sentence. Mentoring plans aimed at stopping children from joining gangs are discussed.

Mismanagement of UK prisons under the Prison Service has led to mishaps such as the accidental early release of 537 prisoners. This is not only due to poor leadership, but stems from the independent authority of the Prison Service over the Home Office.
