East London spreads the word about the atelier system
Article Abstract:
The architectural department of University of East London, England, is being funded to disseminate knowledge about the atelier system of education which it has used since the mid-1980s. The school was failing, but usage of the system led to it receiving an excellent rating by the Higher Education Funding Council. The atelier system focuses on learning the skills to apply knowledge. It allows this aspect of the course to become more dominant as the course progresses and students have acquired more basic knowledge. The system is particularly appropriate for architectural education.

What is sustainability?
Article Abstract:
Essex County Council is keen to develop ideas about sustainability through the design of a sustainable primary school for Great Notley, England. The council has deliberately given little guidance about sustainability to architectural firm Allford Hall Monaghan Morris. This firm's design team has now produced a stage D report which focuses on sustainable materials, orientation, efficient use of space, flexibility, causing as little disruption as possible to the greenfield site, using appropriate construction methods and simplicity of services.

Put aside your pencils
Article Abstract:
Architects can be very effective project managers, according to architect Tony Bartho, who now has his own project-management consultancy. This is because they are very highly qualified and because they think very flexibly. However, architects who are to be really successful project managers must be willing to completely abandon designing, and they do not usually wish to do this. They must also be prepared to improve their financial skills, possibly through further study, and must be able to take decisive action at short notice.
