Women lead the way to the 'New Japan.'

Article Abstract:

The increasingly important role played by women in the growth of Japan's economy has made economists take a second look at their figures. The gross domestic product figures for the first quarter of 1999 were underestimated because it did not take into account significant consumption trends. One of these is the numerous single-female households that have recorded a large consumption growth. Several factors account for women's strong role in the economy. These are changing attitudes toward marriage, increased female work-force participation and size of assets.

Article Abstract:

The plight of Japan's economy was illustrated through a fictional account of the daily experience of a Japanese finance executive. Japanese culture prescribes a mode of behavior which frowns on individual initiative and discourages discussions of contentious topics. As a result, executives already know how to behave and do not speak their minds to their superiors. The clannish system of the Japanese and their inclination to internal consensus means that they are unable to make significant changes which are necessary for the survival of their corporations.
