Italian M&A holds key for Euro-advisers
Article Abstract:
There has been a strong rise in merger and acquisition activity in Italy, according to data based on deals announced during the first quarter of 1999. This has particularly been the case in the banking and telecommunications sectors. Recent deals have included the hostile bid by Olivetti for Telecom Italia and the merger of Banco Commerciale Italiana and Unicredito Italiano. The UK remains the most active European country for mergers and acquisitions in terms of volume, but there has been a rapid rise in merger and acquisition activity in the Netherlands.

Schroders steals march as PwC goes public
Article Abstract:
Schroders was the leading adviser to UK public companies in the period Jan 1999 to Jun 1999, with completed mandates during this period including advising BTR on its purchase by Siebe. PricewaterhouseCoopers advised on eight completed public deals worth 985 million pounds sterling. This made it the first accounting firm to take a place in Acquisitions Monthly magazine's UK public table. During the first half of 1999, 104 public companies were taken over, producing a total transaction value of $50.5 billion.
