East Timor, adrift and violent
Article Abstract:
Conflict in East Timor has intensified as paramilitary groups have set up patrols and roadblocks, threatening supporters of the movement toward independence. The Indonesian government is no longer opposed to independence if the East Timorese vote for it in a ballot sponsored by the United Nations. The militia is backed by the Indonesian army garrision within East Timore, which supplies weapons. The army may be seeking to subvert the government's policy on this issue.

Tigers adrift
Article Abstract:
East Asia's 'tiger' economies, including China, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Malaysia, still face their worst days. The crisis that began in Fall, 1997 brought an end to a period of unprecedented economic growth for the region. Some economists feel the crisis could turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

Castes adrift: India
Article Abstract:
India ruled that 27% of government jobs should be reserved for intermediate castes, who comprise about half of India's population, in addition to the 22% already reserved for lower castes, or untouchables. Protests by upper castes have included student suicides.
