A ruling blaming Iran for the murder of four Kurds in a Berlin bar in 1993 caused the EU to cease relations with Iran and sparked anti-German protests in Tehran, Iran. Turkey is angry at Helmut Kohl for implying that Germany's opposition to Turkey joining the EU is due to Turkey being a Muslim country.

Germany resolves to pursue its interests

Germany is finally acting in its own right on foreign policy issues. Helmut Kohl is following his interests in maintaining political and economic unity in Europe, keeping strong relations with Russia to keep eastern Europe stable, and having close ties with the US.

German chancellor Helmut Kohl will travel to Russia Dec 14-16, 1992 for a high-level visit with Russian Pres Boris Yeltsin. The prospects for improved Russo-German relations are good, although Russia's ability to repay German debts remains a concern.
