Asia has a long way to go to attain democracy
Article Abstract:
The transition to democracy in Asia will not happen overnight, according to Barry Wain. He cites Indonesia as an example of an Asian country that has been under authoritarian rule for most of its existence, therefore it is not surprising that democracy is elusive. The U.S. policy of investment in China is cited as a successful way to subvert one-party rule.

Economic upheaval complicates the spread of democracy among the most stunted political systems
Article Abstract:
The Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats is at the forefront of efforts to promote democracy in the region. A superficial look at what's happening in Asia's political scene may give the impression that democracy is fast taking root in the region. But the sad reality is many opposition parties only use a democratic platform to gain political prominence and revert back to their authoritarian inclinations. But the affluence experienced by many Asians in the last economic boom in the region is one of the best guarantees for democracy to take root in the region, with the clamor of the huge middle class to have a say in the workings of the government.

... Or command great power status?
Article Abstract:
The 1999 bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, Yugoslavia did not only create tension between the two countries, but also signalled a possible cold war between them. Analysts believe that such developments are counterproductive in achieving international peace and security. In order to maintain a balance of power, the US government must recognize China's role in the global community and encourage it to comply with internationally accepted rules.
