Inspection schedules when the lifetime distribution of a single-unit system is completely unknown
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the use of J.B. Keller's inspection density system for the derivation of four optimum inspection policies where the lifetime of the system is entirely unknown. Minimax inspection schedules are discussed.

Optimal maintenance policies in random environments
Article Abstract:
Devices which are designed for use in various environments have varying failure rates depending on the state of the environment. As such, it is better to base their probability of reliability and failure on their intrinsic age instead of their chronological age. This intrinsic age, which depends on environmental conditions, is captured in a semi-Markov model which enables optimal repair and replacement policies to be followed regardless of the working environment.

Marginal cost criteria for preventive replacement of a group of components
Article Abstract:
The use of group age replacement criteria based on marginal costs factors in the preventive maintenance of a multi-component system was investigated. Specifically, the criteria's performance was compared to block renewal policies which implement fixed-interval replacements. In addition, it was evaluated using discrete-time Markov decision chains and simulation. It was shown that the latter perform poorly because replacements of new components occur.
