Economists for EMU
Article Abstract:
A majority of United Kingdom economists surveyed favor joining European monetary union (EMU). A referendum is likely to be held on this issue in the UK in 2001 or 2002. Monetary economists were more likely to oppose joining EMU, while most other types of economists favored joining. Arguments in favor include exchange rate stability and attracting foreign investment. Arguments against include lack of democratic accountability, problems of imposing one monetary policy on a range of economies, and lack of flexibility in European product and labor markets.
