Tax implications for expatriates working in the People's Republic of China
Article Abstract:
Expatriates working in the People's Republic of China (PRC) would benefit from education about and tax planning for the Chinese personal income tax. The law is subject to change and is aggressively enforced. Although the PRC tax law reform in the 1990s changed the tax treatment of expatriates, planning strategies exist to reduce PRC taxation. Important substantive areas which should be addressed include bonus income, corporate directors' income, and employee benefits.

Tax audits in Hong Kong
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong's Inland Revenue Dept's Field Audits are part of a voluntary compliance system which allows the agency to oversee taxpayer returns by conducting on-premises audits where necessary. The system has identified underreported taxes and has been successful in collection efforts between 1991 and 1997. Audits are more likely where businesses engage in certain transactions or whose accounts include certain items of income or loss.
