Embodied energy and thermal mass: common misconceptions
Article Abstract:
The building procurement process is clearly influenced by the environment and the concept of embodied energy is important to the ecological debate within the construction industry. Embodied energy analysis of steel is far advanced despite and the material embodied energy of primary steel is 25-40GJ/tonne, compared to 9-12GT/tonne for recycled steels. Architects have been looking at the issue of thermal mass and its effect on building design and a paper on the thermal capacity of steel framed buildings found that the physical mass required to produce necessary levels of thermal storage is fairly low.

Life-cycle assessment
Article Abstract:
The UK construction industry employs over 14 million people and provides 17% of gross domestic product in 1998. Construction encompasses a wide variety of issues, ranging from energy to environmental use. Life-cycle assessment (LCA) is a management tool to assess the impact different materials have on the environment. The Building Research Establishment (BRE) is assessing the use of LCA within the UK construction industry as a method to improve standards and sustainability.

Environmental comparisons: an environmental audit of two headquarters offices focused on embodied and transport energy as well as energy in use
Article Abstract:
An environmental audit of the British Council's two headquarters buildings at Spring Gardens in London and Medlock Street in Manchester, investigated issues related to energy use, including energy consumption, staff transport energy and embodied energy of the building. Staff travel was found to be significant with a substantially lower staff travel component for London compared to Manchester, where most staff travel is by car.
