Empire of the glum
Article Abstract:
The Tokyo Stock Exchange has not improved despite the announcement of Crown Prince Naruhito's engagement to Masako Owada. Although Emperor Akihito's marriage in 1959 triggered a buying spree for televisions which sustained improvements in Japan's economy, there is not much economic stimulation being created by PrinceNaruhito's betrothal. The slight 200-point rise in the Nikkei index, while attributable to the royal engagement, only favored leading pearl retailer Tasaki Shinju Co and electronics manufacturer Victor Company of Japan Ltd.

Not-so-funny wages
Article Abstract:
Japan's ailing economy is forcing many companies to give lower bonuses to their employees. 1992 marks the first time in years that the big Japanese corporations will cut bonuses for its workers. However, lower bonuses could mean fewer purchases of consumer goods among Japanese consumers. Additionally, Japanese workers favor the giving of cash bonuses, instead of the coupons that have already been distributed by some companies to their employers.
