Employment theory and the wheel of retailing: segmenting the circle
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the retail labor market, the grocery sector in particular, supports the concept that employment structures are not independent from the greater structural changes occurring in the retail industry. The study also demonstrated that every cyclical phase reflects a change in labor relationships starting from the functional flexibility of the small independent to the entry stage of the discount multiples to the formal structures of mature retailers. The specific nature of employment is said to be affected by organisational, product market and technological transformations.

Developments in the superstore labour market
Article Abstract:
A empirical study on superstore retailing's effect on employment is presented. The labor segmentation theory was employed to make a limited assessment of employment reforms in the superstore sector. Operational stability and flexibility within the sector were established by maintaining workforces with secured and part-time classifications. The analysis of the superstore sector did not support the theory that the segmented labor market limits mobility.
