He hit the ground cycling
Article Abstract:
American businessman Eugene Matthews believes that Vietnam's plentiful natural resources, cheap labor and large consumer market offer tremendous scope for US investment. Since the US government allowed businessmen to open offices in Vietnam from Dec 14, 1992, Matthews applied for permission too. Meanwhile, he conducts economic research in Vietnam, looks for potential joint-venture partners and does government liaison work for his clients. Matthews admits that American firms will have to catch up with their Asian counterparts, but reiterates that the Vietnamese still prefer American goods.

Water woes
Article Abstract:
Malaysia has an acute water shortage and people are protesting about their limited water supply. Kuala Lumper only gets water for 12 hours every second day. However, this supply is erratic and unreliable. The shortage is cause by deforestation, building, logging projects and tourist development. El Nino has also reduced the level of rainfall in Malaysia. Two catchment areas reported only 383 millimeters during Jan to Apr compared to the average figure of 808 millimeters. Selangor state needs an extra 105 million litres of water each day but across Malaysia the deficit is even greater.

Playing the hi-tech card
Article Abstract:
Malaysia is courting high-technology investors in the latest phase of its rocket-like growth. A chronic labor shortage is the greatest problem, and many firms hope to overcome that in part through automation. Textiles, chemical goods, and electronics remain the favorites of foreign investors, and got 2/3 of their capital in 1994. The govt is encouraging such investors to look to the hinterlands for new sites, and has set up its first science park at Kulim in the northwest. Port congestion is also a major problem.
