South African fishing has suffered in the process of transformation for 8 years. This brought about fears in established companies as disadvantaged people were given quotas and there was widespread corruption, which came to light when Hout Bay Fishing Industries were raided. Patrolling vessels are helping in controlling quota violations.

Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission released its allocation model to Maori tribes (iwi) in which the quota allocations and 80% of Aotearoa Fisheries Ltd., (AFLs) income shares to be distributed to iwi on a population basis are given. This will enable the Maori tribes to become stronger economically and socially.
