Engineering a relationship
Article Abstract:
The UK dominated world engineering during much of the nineteenth century, although engineering firms had little input into construction. Innovation came in the use of iron in the design of multi storey mills, warehouses and factory buildings, although even these buildings did not draw much on the skill of architects. An engineering approach to building design was advocated in 1904, and it was not uncommon for the reinforced concrete element of a building to be designed by contractors providing the steel, as recently as the 1960s.

Engineering artistry
Article Abstract:
Engineering skills are required when designing and building supports and platforms for large pieces of modern architecture which need to be placed outside to face the barrage of weather and public use. Engineering firm Price and Myers has worked with many of the UK's leading modern architects, providing knowledge and expertise in the field of foundations, support and platforms. The supports must not detract from the work of art, therefore close collaboration must take place between the artist and engineering firm.

Just in time: Caunton Engineering is using a combination of Just In Time manufacturing and IT to good effect
Article Abstract:
Caunton Engineering has introduced CAD/CAM automation and Just in Time manufacturing, and believes that structural steelwork lends itself well to CAD/CAM and JIT. Bulk steel is ordered from the mills within seven working days of the start of detailed drawings, with the JIT system. The company opted to adopt a 3D modelling system in 1988 and this was the basis for the its wholly integrated design/manufacturing system.
