Environmental auditing - a management tool whose time has come
Article Abstract:
An environmental audit can be an effective method of evaluating corporate compliance with environmental regulations and standards. Environmental auditing is a form of self-regulation whereby organizations can ensure that they are minimizing environmental risks. Environmental auditing includes environmental reviews, assessments, and appraisals. Some observers feel that the term 'audit' is necessary to provide credibility, while others believe that the term is not appropriate for a purely internal procedure. Volvo's environmental strategy includes an environmental policy, a statement of guidelines for minimum standards, and a policy for preventive control of emissions.

A new era for rail freight?
Article Abstract:
European railways are facing change on several fronts, and policymakers are now focusing on how changes to infrastructure, technology and tax can boost the rail freight sector and so provide a more environmentally-friendly transport choice. Although the overall freight market has risen, rail freight saw its share of the EU freight transport market fall from nearly 32% in 1970 to slightly more than 16% in 1992. This decline is due mainly to poor service and the poor image of rail. However, the pressures of railway liberalisation and environmental issues may now boost rail freight.

The internationalization of the US auto market
Article Abstract:
The U.S. auto industry is recovering from the penetration of Japanese and European imports. The main factor in American loss of market share was an increase on the price of gasoline, which rose 109 percent between 1978 and 1981. A favored strategy adopted by U.S. automakers is retooling and building new models that are distinctive. They also plan to import low-end models from their subsidiaries in countries such as Brazil and Taiwan. The opportunities for new automobile exporters to enter the U.S. market are analyzed.
