Essent, Nuon look underpowered: Dutch energy firms, merger plans shelved, are takeover targets

Netherlands power utilities Nuon N.V. and Essent N.V. will face a potential loss of business value due to legislation that requires energy firms to unbundle specific assets. The two firms currently obtain about half of their cash flows through their distribution operations. The unbundling requirements are effective July 2008 and must be completed by January of 2011.
