Ethnic groups in the labour market
Article Abstract:
A 1999 study predicted 6.4% of the UK population were people in ethnic minorities in 1997. The age profile of people in the ethnic minorities tends to be less than the in White majority. The employment rate for Whites aged between 16-64 years was 75.8% compared to 58% of all ethnic minorities. Less women worked than men in all groups but only 22% of Pakistani/Bangladeshi women were working compared to 58% of the men. The unemployment rates also differed between racial groups, with 5.7% of Whites aged over 16 years being unemployed compared to 13% of all ethnic minorities.

Regional aspects of the labour market
Article Abstract:
The regional characteristics of the UK labour market are discussed. There are strong regional differences in the numbers of people aged over 16. The South East has the highest economic activity rate, with 83.5% of the working age population being employed. There are clear regional differences in unemployment, which is much higher in the North East than in the South East.

Women in the labour market and the gender pay gap
Article Abstract:
Issues are presented concerning the pay gap which exists between male and female workers and the employment of women in the labour market. A review commissioned by the Equal Opportunities Commission in October 1999 is discussed.
