Article Abstract:
Small and medium firms face difficult times in South Korea where many of them are making losses, though some have performed well, such as food and drink company, Cheil Jedang. This company not only specialises in food, which tends to be less affected by recessions, it has also undergone a restructuring process. Trigem is another smaller company that has performed well, though the company has had legal problems with its computer exports to the US. Many smaller firms are dependent on larger firms and cannot deal with those larger firms' competitors.

Career path
Article Abstract:
South Korean conglomerates once received the country's best graduates as well as benefiting from cheap credit, while suppliers were poorly treated. The conglomerates also operated in a range of activities and damaged small companies by doing so. This has changed as smaller companies benefit from opportunities offered by the internet, and conglomerates have had to retrench following the Asian financial crisis. Meanwhile, lifetime employment has ended, and big companies are using profit sharing and stock option schemes to retain key employees.

Scourge of the chaebol
Article Abstract:
Jang Hasung has promoted stockholder rights as a minority stockholder in Samsung Electronics, and through wider campaigns in South Korea. He has been attacked by the conglomerates who argue that he seeks to humiliate the companies and have foreigners acquire them. South Koreais being opened up to foreign investment and the government is backing the idea of stockholder rights. Both these trends favor Jang's campaign. He sees a need to reform the conglomerates, as well as an opportunity to do so.
