Euro '99: a larger-than-expected entry into Europe's economic and monetary union should not be a worry - provided the right rules are set

Leaders of the European Union will meet in early Oct 1996 to discuss possible enlargement of the Union, but the topic that really should be discussed is the pending economic and monetary union. The countries that will be allowed to join such a union is a major concern to all.

Britain wants to exert itself more within the European Community, and would like to see the European Parliament strengthened and the European Commission weakened. It fears a built-in majority of smaller countries ratifying Commission initiatives.
