Improving political relations between France and Germany is fostering a growing economic alliance. The two countries have become the largest trading partners for each other, and Germany is supporting the franc in the European exchange rate mechanism.

The border between France and Germany is becoming meaningless, as thousands cross each day to go to work without any interference. Customs offices have been closed, and French and German border police now perform just token duties.
