Europe economy is booming and 11 nations have cut their budget deficits to the point of assuming the single currency, but since the economic growth is not uniform, a union monetary policy may not work at this time. With time it is expected that the single currency will bring the economies more in line.

The European Monetary Union is scheduled to have its official beginning in Jan 1999, and European Union officials continue to say that the deadline will be met. However, others are not certain, and they point out that several countries, including Germany, may not meet the budget deficit requirements.

The Maastricht conundrum: the economy still suffers from too much public spending and regulation
Article Abstract:
It is questionable whether or not Spain will be able to meet the economic constraints set forth in the Maastricht treaty to join the single currency. Spain needs to reduce its spending and reform its economic policies for the single currency to work and the country's economy to get back on track.
