European telecoms in a tangle
Article Abstract:
The planned merger between Telecom Italia and Deutsche Telekom had been considered prior to a bid for Telecom Italia by Olivetti. The telecommunications industry has become increasingly competitive as a result of liberalization in 1998, and rapid change has unsettled national operators in mainland Europe. Deutsche Telekom was left with large debts from investments in eastern Germany, and has yet to establish a serious international presence. Telecom Italia has been affected by a confusion over strategy as well as increased competition.
