Europe under pressure to tackle its North-South divide
Article Abstract:
One of the challenges for Europe in the 1990s will be to manage the increasing economic disparity between the Economic Community (EC) and the rest of the Mediterranean region. The EC is doubling the amount of economic and financial aid given to the Mediterranean region in the early 1990s, but attitudinal and structural changes are also necessary. The EC should work closely with governments in the region to foster improvements in their infrastructures and to encourage the development of small and mid-sized businesses in order to eliminate the growing social imbalance between north and south.

The globalisation of personal financial services: the European Community after 1992
Article Abstract:
The Cecchini report predicts that the opening of the single European market would spur the globalization of the personal financial services sector. Other authors such as Porter and Levitt dispute Cecchini's forecasts but all indications point to the development of personal financial services for international trade in the long run. Financial services companies should assess the effects of a globalized market and be prepared to react to concomitant changes.
