Europe's biodiesel drive sputters: industry's woes endanger EU goal for using fossil-fuel alternatives

Support for biodiesel fuel in the European Union is beginning to flag under production expenses, lack of tax incentives, less expensive imports, and concerns over the impact of its production on the environment. Europe's biodiesel capacity has increased from 2 mil to 10 mil metric tons since 2003, but growing biodiesel crops has placed pressure on food and land prices.

EU clears way for biotech potato: move on crop used in paper making signals concession
Article Abstract:
The European Commission has approved the cultivation of a genetically modified potato developed by BASF AG to be used to manufacture a paper coating. The European Union's agriculture ministers could not agree whether to allow farmers to grow the potato, which shifted the decision to the EU's executive branch.
