Europe's incoming tide
Article Abstract:
There are a number of factors that have led to a weaker relationship between Britain and partners in the European Union (EU) compared to many other EU members and their links with the EU. These factors include Britain being an island which used to have an empire, which has a particular relationship with the US, and which was a victor in the 1939-1945 war. Britain has not joined European monetary union, unlike other major countries in the EU. There is also a debate on political issues and concerns that the EU is moving toward closer political union.
