Let's stay outside
Article Abstract:
The UK should not join the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) in the future foreseeable from Jan 1 1999. Membership of EMU would probably mean higher tax rates for the UK due to demands for harmonized tax rates. Movement towards a single European interest rate would also be inappropriate to the UK which differs economically from other European countries. Continuation of the status quo means that UK citizens can remove from political office a government which is mismanaging the economy.

Do politics and business mix?
Article Abstract:
The Institute of Directors (IoD) does not become directly involved in political developments in the UK, but believes that it has a duty to make political parties aware of the views of businesses. In the run-up to the next general election, it will be informing political parties about policies which would benefit business, and will be calling on the parties to detail their views on these issues. It will place particular emphasis on the need to cut public expenditure and taxation.

Where we are - and where we could be
Article Abstract:
The UK has seen strong economic growth over recent years, and its best companies remain extremely productive. However, overall productivity is still disappointing, with too many companies being underproductive. Against this background, the government's Competitiveness White Paper and related publications are important in highlighting where improvements still need to be made. It would be useful if the publication of the Competitiveness White Paper were to become an annual event.
