Evasive action: how Delta's cash cushion pushed it onto wrong course
Article Abstract:
Following the September 11 terrorist attacks on the U.S., Delta Air Lines Inc. felt it stood at a safe distance from the financial troubles of its competitors. At the time, it was one of the strongest U.S. airlines financially thanks to profits earned during the 1990s and its fiscally conservative management practices. Three years following the attacks, however, Delta is facing severe financial challenges and has fallen far behind its competitors in restructuring its operations to adapt to the changing landscape of the aviation industry.

For BMI, 'open skies' is a wide-open opportunity
Article Abstract:
An aviation agreement between the European Union and the US will allow British Midland Airways Ltd. to begin using its Heathrow Airport slots for travel to the US, beginning in April 2008. This is expected to drive the airline's growth, which may prompt the carrier's chairman and controlling shareholder Michael Bishop to sell his stake of 50% plus one share.
