Over the rainbow
Article Abstract:
South Africa continues to experience considerable economic difficulties. However, foreign businesses that are already firmly established in South Africa believe that it is the safest emerging market. South Africa offers considerable opportunities for foreign businesses, especially those from the UK, which has always had strong commercial links with South Africa. Areas of activity offering particular potential include initiatives to improve conditions for the black majority, black empowerment and the use of South Africa as base from which to reach the rest of Africa.

The small business wish-list
Article Abstract:
Five major problems to small business are discussed. The first concerns late payers and a statutory right to interest is suggested. Small businesses face unfair competition when dealing with Europe, and apparently this situation is getting worse. Small businesses could benefit from a tax break allowing them to write-off the purchase of capital equipment on a turnover of 10 million pounds sterling or less in the first year. They also could benefit from the reform of the Uniform Business Rate and from improved relationships with banks.
