Expansion uncertainties dog colony steel company
Article Abstract:
Observers report that the recent retirement of Zhou Guanwu from the chairmanship of China's Capital Iron and Steel Co. is having an impact on the company's Hong Kong affiliate. Zhou's retirement has cast doubt on Shougang Concord International Enterprises Co.'s (Shougang) ambitious expansion plans and investors have been advised to take a wait-and-see attitude with regard to the company's stock. Shougang had been popular with investors because of Zhou's close relationship to Deng Xiaoping. Many had anticipated lucrative contracts for the company in view of its political connections but Zhou's recent retirement has thrown all such speculation askew.

Back home, again
Article Abstract:
Returning Hong Kong resident Tony Leung, from Canada, showed his optimism in Hong Kong's future, even under China's control. Leung believes Hong Kong has the flexibility to weather any effects the handover has on the colony's economy. Leung has left behind his life in Canada to start life anew in his old country, optimistic that the job market in Hong Kong is more favorable and challenging than that which he left behind in Canada. Leung does miss many of the comforts and conveniences of life in Canada.
