Australian 3-D sonar system stays calm in rough waters
Article Abstract:
Thomson Marconi Sonar of Australia is developing the Acoustic Mine Imaging (AMI) sonar in collaboration with the Defence Science and Technology Organization and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The active, VHF-3 imaging sonar system has been designed for the RAN's requirement to boost the effectiveness of its mine warfare operatiions in turbid coastal waters. Initial results showed that the AMI sonar offers an instantaneous, high-fidelity resolution of range, bearing, and elevation of mines lying on the seabed by acoustic means.
