F-16 helmet-mounted cuing takes off
Article Abstract:
GEC-Marconi Avionics and Honeywell have tested a jointly developed Helmet Mounted Cueing System (HMCS) on board a Royal Netherlands Air Force F-16B. All four members of the European Partner Air Forces took part in the trials. The HMCS features sophisticated display processors and symbol generators that can drive a range of helmet-mounted displays (HMD), combined with a Honeywell advanced metal-tolerant tracker in one unit. The tests featured three kinds of visor-projected HMD: the GEC-Marconi Avionics Viper I; Viper IV; and Honeywell's Look-and-Shoot design. Operations covered dedicating a sensor to the pilot's sightline and guiding him to acquire targets already being followed by a sensor.

Ultra-wideband technology opens up new horizons
Article Abstract:
Ultra-wideband (UWB) radio and radar technology is emerging as a multipurpose tool for military applications. To date, the technology is used for such purposes as wide-area sensing, mine detection, through-wall surveillance, unmanned aerial vehicle guidance, communications, seekers for guided bombs and foliage-penetration radars. UWB, whose very low energy density makes it virtually undetectable, is also adaptable to microminiaturization and is inexpensive to manufacture.
